Three in Four US Enterprises Will Only Upgrade Cyber Security After An Attack

Enterprises mostly still live in the dark ages of cyber security, unfortunately enough. A recent survey by the RSA indicates the majority of companies dealing with cyber attacks have little to no response capabilities. In this day and age of hacking, data breaches, and malware threats, such a lackluster level of security is entirely unacceptable.

A Stern Wake-up Call For Enterprises

The survey conducted by the RSA is not spelling much good for enterprises in the United States. The traditional wait-and-see-what-happens approach will come to bite most of these companies in the rear in the not so distant future. Nearly seven in ten enterprises admitted they will only step up their cyber security game once they have been the victim of such an attack.

The RSA Cybersecurity Poverty Index, as this research is called, has yielded some worrisome results, to say the last. Organizations and enterprises should know better than to leave the door wide open for hackers and other internet criminals to take advantage of. Some lessons in life have to be learned the hard way, but cyber security should not be one of them.

While there are companies who have invested in response and detection technologies, they are vastly outnumbered by their lazy counterparts. It has to be said, however, how things have improved compared to the 2015 version of this survey. Then again, the incremental increase in enterprises stepping up their defenses is not something to be proud of at this point.

RSA President Amit Yoran told the media:

“This second round of cybersecurity research provides tangible evidence that organizations of all sizes, in all industries and from all geographies feel unprepared for the threats they are facing. We need to change the way we are thinking about security, to focus on more than just prevention – to develop a strategy that emphasizes detection and response. Organizations need to set their agendas early, build comprehensive strategies and not wait for a breach to force them into action.”

It will come as no surprise to find US companies are ranking far worse compared to other regions in the world. The EMEA region has the best cyber security defenses these days, followed by APJ. It looks like the game of cyber security measures is far from over, but for now, internet criminals seem to hold all of the cards.
