More Attempted Hacks for State Voting Systems

The FBI released a statement Friday detailing more threats found to be carried out against the U.S. Voting system. These attacks are coming during the nations close proximity to the National Presidential Election.

The FBI found evidence in August that hackers had breached multiple state election databases. The FBI has said that they have found other attempts aside from the ones it had previously mentioned. They say frequent scanning activities have been happening as well, which the FBI describes as preludes for hacking attempts.

“There have been a variety of scanning activities, which is a preamble for potential intrusion activities, as well as some attempted intrusions at voter registration databases beyond those we knew about in July and August,” Director of the FBI, James Comey stated.

“Voter registration systems that are connected to the Internet are at risk of cyber-attacks. The voting system in the U.S. is hard to hack into because it’s so clunky and dispersed,” Comey said further. “ States should get the best information they can from the Department of Homeland Security and ensure their systems are tight as there is no doubt that some bad actors have been poking around.”

“We are doing an awful lot of work throughout counter-intelligence investigators to understand just what mischief Russia is up to in connection with our elections.”

There has been speculation that Russia is behind the voting hacks, as well as others. Even dark net researchers have claimed that Russian based hacking groups are responsible for several major U.S. technology sector breaches as well.

“The U.S. government is unsure if Russia is behind this series of cyber-attacks, and whether the motivation is to influence the outcome of the election, or if it is for monetary gain,” Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper stated in an interview.
