Potential Merger Between FanDuel and DraftKings May Not Be Best For Business

Fantasy sports leagues have become a whole new business model of their own in the past decade. Even in the online space, companies are duking it out to provide customers with the best user experience. DraftKings & FanDuel are two big names in that regard, although that situation may change soon. A merger between the two sites is not unlikely, as both parties are allegedly in talks to make that become a reality.

Will It Be DraftDuel or FanKings In The Future?

The names DraftKings and FanDuel will ring a bell among sports fans all over the world. Even though not every NBA, NFL, or other sport’s supporter is involved in fantasy leagues, the concept is well-known around the globe. But what would happen if these two fantasy league giants were to merge? We may find out sooner rather than later.

ESPN reported how a merger between both companies seems to be ‘imminent”. Other sources mention how both companies are in serious talks but have not reached an agreement just yet. Mergers like these hinge on specific details, and since both companies compete with one another, there are plenty of things to discuss during the negotiations.

There is a very good reason why these companies have not explored merging into one company before. Both Fanduel, as well as DraftKings, are facing legal scrutiny all over the United States. Some states feel that they are running a gambling business. That is not entirely surprising, considering that fantasy leagues are a form of gambling as well as a competition.

A combination between DraftKings and FanDuel would be quite intriguing, though. Both companies seem open to the idea, but it remains unknown who has initiated the first step during these talks. For now, this “news” is nothing more than speculation, as neither enterprise has commented on this leaked information so far.

For the consumer such a merger would be both good news and bad news. It is annoying to deal with two platforms, as one’s friends may have a preference for one over the other. Participating in fantasy leagues is not free of charge in most cases, and paying two “subscriptions” can get quite costly very quickly.

At the same time, both FanDuel and DraftKings are in direct competition with one another. If these companies were to merge, it would remove this competitive edge, and may delay the introduction of new features. Then again, new companies may rise up and take on the fantasy league business in the coming years.
