It is a well-known fact SpaceX has big plans when it comes to commercializing space travel. What very few people are aware of is how the company plans to organize a public lottery where one lucky winner will receive a free ticket for one of the company’s future private space flights. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for everyone who has ever dreamed of venturing into space.
SpaceX Private Space Flight Lottery Begins Soon
Rest assured Elon Musk has plenty of confidence in SpaceX’s chance of successfully completing a trip around the moon in 2018. While none of the passengers will be allowed to set foot on this planetary body, it will be quite a sight to behold. What is even more intriguing is how SpaceX has plans in place to repeat their trips to the moon once the first commercial private trip has been successfully completed.
According to SpaceX, every future flight will provide room for two paying customers. However, the company plans to host a dedicated lottery to award a free ticket to one lucky winner moving forward. This lottery will commence on May 15th and run until August 31st of 2017. Everyone in the world will be eligible to enter this lottery, albeit there is one caveat to take into account.
To become a part of this upcoming SolarX lottery, interested parties will need to pre-order the solar roof shingles from Tesla. Keeping in mind how one can start placing orders for these shingles in a few weeks from now, it makes a lot of sense to tie these two campaigns together. Solar roof shingles production is expected to begin this summer at the factory in Buffalo. It is evident Elon Musk has big plans for both the solar tiles and the SpaceX commercial space flights moving forward.

From a marketing point of view, tying the SpaceX lottery to the solar roof shingles launch is a brilliant idea. Elon musk is well-known for being a crafty veteran when it comes to generating attention for his projects, and this is another fine example of his powerful marketing ideas. It is expected this lottery will help drive Tesla’s solar roof shingles sales through the roof in the coming months. After all, who doesn’t want to be part of a private flight around the moon and back?
Once the lottery concludes on August 31st, 2017 at midnight CET, all of these entries will be collected. The official draw will take place on September 3rd, although a location has yet to be announced. We do know Elon Musk himself will attend the event and draw the winner. The whole world will be watching to find out who will be the lucky person to be a part of a future SpaceX space flight around the moon.
Similarly to the 2018 space trip, this lucky winner and one other paying passenger will embark on a trip to the moon and back aboard one of SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. It is believed this trip will take a full week to complete, although that information remains subject to change based on how the 2018 trip unfolds. Distance-wise, traveling in a loop around the moon equals a 350,000-mile round trip.
