BitTorrent Forum Breach Results In Passwords Being Stolen

It is not hard to come by yet another data breach these days, and forums remain a very weak point of the chain. Traditional databases are utterly insufficient when it comes to storing sensitive data. The latest breach comes in the form of a list of uTorrent accounts being stolen.

BitTorrent Forums Breached Through Third Party Vendor

To be more precise, the information was obtained from the official BitTorrent forums. A third-party vendor is responsible for maintaining and storing the collect forum information in database solutions. As it turns out, that vendor has been breached on June 6, and a security incident was logged.

This incident resulted in a lot of user information being stolen by hackers, and it appears uTorrent users may be affected by this debacle. In fact, the BitTorrent forum staff has warned uTorrent users to change the password associated with their login, as it may have been compromised in the process.

“While the passwords may not be used as a vector on the forums, those hashed passwords should be considered compromised. Anyone using the same password for forums, as well as other places, is strongly advised to update their passwords and/or practice good personal security practices.”

For the time being, it remains unclear as to whether or not other information was accessed during this breach as well. BitTorrent forum administrators are still investigating the incident, but the staff has managed to cut off the attack vector entirely. No information was provided as to what caused the breach in the first place, though.

Over the past few months, there have been more data breaches affecting major companies and platforms than ever before. BitTorrent joins a very long list, which includes Myspace, Twitter, LinkedIn, Tumblr, and the Russian counterpart of Facebook, called VK.com.
