It appears as if the Acer online store has been hacked, and a lot of payment information has been stolen. Although very specific details are still wrapped in mystery for the time being; it looks like credit card details were part of the retrieved information. This incident took place between May 12, 2015 and April 28, 2016.
The number of data breaches is increasing exponentially, and it turns out most of the events transpired somewhere in 2015. In the case of Acer, however, the violation has gone by unnoticed for nearly a full year. Customers who ordered products from the websites between May 2015 and April 2016 may have had their credit card information stolen.
In a letter sent out to potentially affected customers, Acer mentioned how sensitive information may have been retrieved. Among the information are names, addresses, credit card numbers, expiry dates, and the verification code. Social security numbers are not stored, and passwords and login credentials were not the objectives of this breach, apparently.
The primary objective for Acer is to safeguard consumer information, and they took action to remediate the situation. Third-party cybersecurity experts are helping the company in identifying the cause for the breach, and come up with a solution to address the problem. Law enforcement agencies will be involved as well.
Affected customers are advised to get in touch with their bank and local police station. Moreover, contacting the State Attorney General’s office or the FTC may not be a bad idea either. Consumers can do very little to protect themselves against credit card theft, other than blocking their card as soon as possible to prevent fraudulent transactions.
It is unknown as to how many customers may be affected by this data breach in total. Acer is one of the biggest companies in the computer and networking space, and they serve a lot of customers around the world. For now, it looks like only US customers’ details were obtained during this data breach.
