In 2024, three key crypto narratives—AI, memecoins, and real-world assets (RWA)—delivered the highest returns, with AI emerging as the top performer.
The AI narrative boasted an average return of 2,940% year-to-date (YTD), marking it as the most profitable theme. This late-year rally was largely driven by the rising popularity of Virtuals Protocol (VIRTUAL), which gained massive traction in December. AI returns surged from 1,598% earlier in the year to their current levels, overtaking memecoins as the dominant narrative.
Memecoins were another standout performer, with average returns of 2,185% YTD. They initially led the market in March, with gains skyrocketing from 97% to 1,713% in just one month. By December 9, memecoin returns peaked at 3,211%, cementing their position as the most profitable narrative for much of the year. However, interest began to wane, leading to a decline in returns as the year closed.
The RWA narrative, while not as explosive, posted consistent gains throughout 2024, with an average return of 820% YTD. Early in the year, returns grew steadily, reaching 365% by April 12. The narrative then entered a period of stagnation, ranging sideways for six months before resuming its upward momentum in November. This resurgence was fuelled by a price spike in $OM, the token from MANTRA Chain, which revitalized interest in RWA projects.
Overall, AI, memecoins, and RWA have defined 2024 as the year of diverse and high-return crypto narratives, each capturing the market’s attention in distinct ways.
