Top 4 IoT Devices Gaining Mainstream Adoption

With the Internet of Things ecosystem rapidly expanding, the market is becoming saturated with all types of devices. That is also what makes the IoT market so intriguing, as a lot of innovation is taking place in quick succession. It is still early to tell what the top Internet of Things devices will be by the end of 2017, however a strong contenders are emerging.

#4 Air-Quality Sensors

Quite a few people are actively concerned about the air quality in a specific location. Our bodies require enough oxygen to perform at optimal levels, yet there are improvements to be made regarding the air quality at home. These air-quality sensors can send recommendations via text message to improve oxygen levels. Additionally, some of these devices will help improve productivity and sleep, making them a powerful contender for mainstream adoption in 2017

#3 The “Reverse’ Smart Thermostat

Companies such as Nest are making a fortune by selling their smart thermostats to consumers all over the world. Nearly all of these devices allow users to control the room temperature through a smartphone app, which makes for a convenient user experience.

Some companies are trying to do the reverse, by allowing the smart thermostat to detect the smartphone’s location. In doing so, the devices will adjust the room temperature based the homeowner’s location. One major point of focus is ensuring this tool works for multiple user profiles within the same location. Controlling multiple rooms at once by not tapping on a screen sounds like something consumers might enjoy.

#2 Smart Coffee Makers V2

The idea of a smart coffee maker has been around for quite some time. Most consumers envision this product as an internet-connected machine that is capable of receiving commands to brew coffee. New developments in this sector extend that functionality, by allowing devices to order coffee supplies and send out maintenance alerts through a mobile application. Some expertsthis trend as “version 2.0” of the smart coffee maker.

#1 Smarthome Hubs

One aspect hurting the IoT ecosystem right now is how every manufacturer has their own proprietary hub. Communication between devices of different brands is nearly impossible, but some companies are working to resolve these issues. Wink is a smarthome hub connecting multiple IoT brands into one smooth user experience.

Although these smarthome hubs will rely on partnerships with third-party manufacturers, they are a step in the right direction. Consumers are not interested in controlling four hubs because they have IoT devices of four different manufacturers at home. A unified approach is direly needed, and proper Smarthome hubs will find their way into the homes of mainstream consumers over the next few months.
