According to recent reports, it seems like the English language just got 1,400+ words larger, considering the fact that these many words were just added to the Merriam-Webster unabridged dictionary.
For those that do not know, the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is one of the world’s most complete, alongside with others such as the English Oxford Dictionary, which last added 400 words to its lexicon of the English language last summer.
However, the ramifications of this are quite interesting. As the title suggests, Bitcoin was also added as a word, thus consecrating its position in history, and in the English language. Nonetheless, with the addition of this word, it is expected for a wider range of bitcoin-related words to be added in with the next update, such as blockchain, the BTC abbreviation, satoshi and more.
Some of the other words that made it to the dictionary include ‘dox’, which is the process of publishing information about someone in order to get revenge, alongside with the abbreviation of FOMO (fear of missing out), ICYMI (in case you missed it), and TMI (too much information). Considering the evolution of the English language, these words will surely find their place in the vocabulary of people from all around the world.
Based on everything that has been outlined so far, what do you personally think about the addition of the Bitcoin word, to the Merriam-Webster unabridged dictionary? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
